Pierre Gimmonet & Fils

Truly premier chardonnay champagnes

As one of the great grower families of the Côtes de Blancs, the Gimonnets produce the bluest of blue chip Chardonnay Champagnes. Over the last three generations, they have refined the ‘Gimmonet’ style, winning awards and praise. The vineyard raises chardonnay grapes in the heart of Côte des Blancs and champagne country.

From grandfather to grandsons

The Gimmonet family have been growing vines in the Champagne area since 1750. In 1935, in the village of Cuis, Pierre Gimonnet began producing champagne. His grandsons, brothers Olivier and Didier, have inherited some splendid vines. More than half their vines are more than 40 years old. A couple are more than 80 years old.

Premier Cru, chalk and clay

The vineyards lie mostly on chalk soils or chalk and clay. 16 hectares are Premier Cru from the village of Cuis. 12 percent of their vineyards are Grand Cru, located around the Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Aÿ and are around 40 years old. 28 hectares of chardonnay vines create refined Blanc de Blancs cuvées of distinction.

Following tradition

The Pierre Gimonnet wines go through primary and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Reserve wines are stored in bottles rather than tanks. This is the accepted way in the Champagne region. It is recognised as a process that helps slow down the evolution process and maintain freshness.

A restrained exuberance

Didier takes a great deal of pride in the fact that he blends his Grand Cru fruit with the 1er Cru wine from Cuis. This creates great wine for a reasonable price. The acidity of their Cuis vineyard is integral in creating the restrained exuberance of their chardonnay champagne. Above all, the brothers aim to create champagnes that they love. There is a depth of elegances, aromatic finesse, minerality and freshness to their wines. It’s no wonder wine critic Robert ‘The Wine Advocate’ Parker rates them as ‘outstanding’.
